More focus is being placed on developing greater student awareness of Asian culture, history and global significance. Some schools have already incorporated Asian study into their programs but all schools will now begin phasing in Asian texts in their junior English currirculum. My research increased my appreciation for the incredible range of material that is available but I concentrated on the South East Asian region.
'Exploring Asian Voices' is now in its final pre-publication phase and should be available during Term I. It includes a wide range of text types and caters for differing stages and ability levels for Secondary English students. More challenging texts such as 'The China Coin' also work well as related texts for both the current Area of Study 'Belonging' HSC course and the 2015 'Discovery' course. A follow-up second volume, designed specifically for years 10,11 and 12 is also in the pipeline.
School based staff development workshops can also be organised based on incorporating National Curriculum teaching and learning strategies, programs and content such as Asian studies into your English scope and sequence.
