I will be beginning drafting revisions for 'Wilfred Owen, 'The Life and Crimes of Harry Lavender' and 'A Beautiful Mind' next week and will keep you informed about progress and some ideas of how to approach these texts for the next round. While most of us who have taught Owen before will be comfortable with the majority of poems, two of the new ones are very complex and Standard students will need quite a lot of help to grasp the conceptual focus. The shift from Distinctive Voice to Module B for the 'Lavender' novel will be accessible for teachers and students and I know a lot of teachers are considering doing the film as a Module B text. As with most texts, students need to be careful about using some of the materials that are available to ensure that they remain focused on what the syllabus requires.
Some of us will not be sorry to see the last of 'Belonging' this year but each round seems to raise the conceptual standards. I am not offering a 'Belonging' TTA workshop this year as most teachers will be teaching the same texts for this last round but I will post some excellent websites that can be used for 'Belonging' CW prompts and related texts. The following site could be useful for 'Romulus, My Father' but also for developing 'life writing' skills. http://www.migrationheritage.nsw.gov.au/homepage/
A trailer site for the recently released Tim Winton film could prompt your students to consider using it as a possible related text, because it is so rich. http://www.abc.net.au/atthemovies/txt/s3846630.html I have also included my pinterest details if you are interested in looking at my boards related to Secondary English which have lots of images, T&L strategies and resources for topics such as 'Crime Writing Prompts', 'Discovery' and 'Asian Resources'. http://www.pinterest.com/barbarastanners If you have ever considered using 'skype' in the classroom, have a look at this site as well. https://education.skype.com/ Hope you get back into the swing of things in your second week and find these sites interesting. Teachers who missed out on TTA Workshop topics that are not being offered for 2014, can contact me and I can see if there is sufficient interest to offer an online 5 hour course that I could offer instead.
I am an experienced H.T. English, author and presenter. I offer School based student/staff workshops in 2018. My online and face to face tuition will be expanded to include Teacher SD mentoring and workshops.
