Exploring Interactions and Transitions
The key to insight, personal growth and transformation.
Module C - Texts and Society
The elective titles have change and some of the texts have been shifted around but fundamentally, this module has not changed in major ways, especially 'Exploring Transitions'. This will be a relief to teachers because most are familiar with most of the prescribed texts. I have always found that students often find this Module more accessible, the concepts easier to engage with and analyse in the associated texts.
The new text options such as 'Unpolished Gem' and 'Black Balloon' have also been popular in the past as related texts and again, many teachers are familiar with them. With plenty of resources available online and in print, teachers should be able to find this last module less time consuming.
What remains important however is the need to focus on the social context for each text as clearly indicated by the Module title and guidelines. Channels of communication within this societal context must also be addressed. the text serves as a vehicle to demonstrate how social texts convey ideas, knowledge, attitudes and beliefs.
I will be focusing on five of the text types, 'Billy Elliot', 'The Story of Tom Brennan', 'Romulus, My Father','Educating Rita' and the verse novel 'The Simple Gift'. 2014 TTA workshops will deal some of these texts using current elective focus while all five will be offered as TTA workshops next year using the new 2015 electives.
