Reading to Write Module

There are so many wonderful short, powerful texts and clips for raising student awareness about the importance of reading. Stats show that people are reading and using libraries less and authors such as Neil Gaiman are campaigning to stress that reading widely and often, broadens the mind, develops social empathy and general well-being. Modern life offers many distractions to reading but this Common Module foregrounds why we have to 'sell' the many benefits of reading more than ever before. A great module and many wonderful texts that can be used to promote it for students. I use television advertisements to promote student awareness of how texts can be 'read', using the following two images to prompt discussion about why reading is key to learning and writing well.
