Windsor Library - 'Belonging' workshop/lecture for students I will be running a 90 minute, morning workshop in the July holidays for 'Belonging'. Details are being finalised and the focus will be on skills revision and how they can maximise their HSC results. Will give an update next blog.
After a very busy round of regional workshops in the second half of last term, I am back finishing off the Standard Course Resource book for 2015 onwards. I have left the seven prescribed poems in 'At the Round Earth's Imagined Corners' published by Phoenix, until last. It is an excellent selection of style and subject matter for the Elective 1 'Exploring Interactions' and should be very accessible for students. There are two poems by Carol Duffy, 'Head of English' which was on a previous list and 'Yes, Officer' which will be new to most teachers. Both poems are rich stylistically and connect well with the Module Elective which is not always the case with the texts that are on offer. Social issues and situations are dealt with in Duffy's often confronting manner that prompts reader reflection and re-evaluation. Many resources are available for 'Head of English' but virtually nothing for the second poem.
Similarly, two poems are listed for another famous female poet, UA Fanthorpe, the popular 'Not My Best Side' and 'Reports'. It is interesting to note that two of the seven poems for this elective deal explicitly in negative terms, with school as a social institution in general but school teachers in particular. Students will no doubt find this interesting. I think this is an excellent Module C option, far better in many ways than some of the others which I found unsuitable and/or unattractive for the majority of standard students.
I particularly disliked 'Feed', and feel that the two plays would not be overly accessible to many Standard students for this elective. The poems by contrast, fit brilliantly and offer a wide range of techniques and approaches that would give students a lot to say about how they communicate information, ideas, attitudes and values in relation to specific social contexts.
I am an experienced H.T. English, author and presenter. I offer School based student/staff workshops in 2018. My online and face to face tuition will be expanded to include Teacher SD mentoring and workshops.
